Vile Ted and the Experiments is a multi-target boss encounter in Borderlands 4, fought during the side mission “Below the Surface.” Use this page when you need the Hydrus Sublab route, the Vile Armor priority, and the fast farm loop for Goalkeeper and Seventh Sense. How to reach Vile Ted
Fast-travel to the Hydrus Sublab in the Terminus District of Dominion City and head east toward the facility. The encounter triggers during the side mission Below the Surface.
The fight: three targets, all with Vile Armor
“Vile Ted and the Experiments” is actually three enemies:
- Vile Ted — a Mutant Psycho
- Experiment 42 — a small Creep
- Experiment 1709 — a large Creep
Each one is protected by Vile Armor sitting over a Flesh health bar. Destroy the Vile Armor crystals on their bodies first, then attack the exposed flesh underneath. Bring an element you’re comfortable swapping to against flesh, and keep room to reposition as each defeated target is immediately replaced by the next experiment.
Target order and modifiers
The original guide describes Vile Ted appearing first, then Experiment 42 and Experiment 1709. Killing the active boss causes the next to appear immediately, so this is not simply three targets spawning together. Experiment 42 has Chain Master beams; Experiment 1709 has the Irritable grenade modifier. Leave room to reposition when the next target arrives.
Drops
Vile Ted and the Experiments has two dedicated legendary drops:
- Goalkeeper
- Seventh Sense
In addition, the Red Chest after the encounter has a small chance to drop a random world-drop legendary, and it resets every time you respawn the boss — so the Moxxi’s Big Encore loop is worth running for both the dedicated drops and the chest rolls. Goalkeeper is an Order assault rifle; Seventh Sense is a Jakobs pistol. Their individual effects and original item sources are linked above.
